Breaking news: AFA is full of racists; sky also observed to be blue

In response to the ‘whole AFA thing‘, the question that really feels most relevant is: is white supremacism within Heathenry news to anyone?

I hardly condone it, but it’s not ‘new’ and it’s not a surprise. I’m not even shocked, given the history of the Asatru Folk Assembly.

I don’t really care what the AFA’s official stance on racism is. Only the most devotedly white supremacist actually advertise it publicly (usually while denouncing Jews and advocating race wars). The far larger group of racist sympathizers keep their mouths shut more often or couch their racism in more appropriate-seeming terms of ‘folk soul’ and metagenetics and ancestral culture. Racist sympathizers know that it’s hard to sell a moderately sane person a frothing racial polemic, but if you make it seem like they’re just part of a warm, fuzzy, safe (and lily white) community… well.

I basically assume that any organization advocating a ‘folkish’ stance on religion is going to be rife with the sort of people who are really worried about White Power. White separatism is white supremacism, and the founder of the AFA is at least demonstrably a white separatist.

So I’m here to break the code. On the Asatru Folk Assembly site, in their declaration of purpose, numero 2 is

The preservation of the Peoples of the North (typified by the Scandinavian/Germanic and Celtic peoples), and the furtherance of their continued evolution:
Ours is an ancestral religion, one passed down to us from our forebears from ancient times and thus tailored to our unique makeup. Its spirit is inherent in us as a people. If the People of the North ceased to exist, Asatru would likewise no longer exist. It is our will that we not only survive, but thrive, and continue our upward evolution in the direction of the Infinite.

[…] Asatru is not just what we believe, it is what we are. Therefore, the survival and welfare of the Northern European peoples as a cultural and biological group is a religious imperative for the AFA.

Despite the fact the blurb demonstrates a pretty lousy comprehension of the history of the modern neopagan revival, I suppose the question is: who the fuck is going to cause the total annihilation of the “Scandinavian/Germanic and Celtic peoples,” especially as a biological group? A conservative estimate puts that number at at least 80 million people in Europe alone. The biggest enemy of Ásatrú is evidently a catastrophic asteroid impact.

Of course, Ásatrú did cease to exist for several centuries, at least in the sense of a practicing and practicable religion, and hasn’t really recovered from the blow. And there were still loads of white people in Scandinavia, white Christians who converted white pagans, so I guess maybe Ásatrú has more to do with thoughts and gods than some bullshit metagenetics.

Just to make a point, here’s the AFA again:

Therefore, the survival and welfare of the Northern European peoples as a cultural and biological group is a religious imperative for the AFA.
[…]
The issuance of a call to all our brothers and sisters of the People of the North to return to this, their native religion and way of life

(It’s also pretty obviously anti-government, which isn’t relevant to the white supremacism per se, but is another far-right stance. The AFA’s hatred of Christians is also something many explicitly white supremacist organizations share.)

And here’s the Church of the Creator, directly related to the National Socialist White Americans Party [citation]:

“a legally recognized, professional, non-violent, progressive pro-White religion for White people, by White people.”

This is Stephen McNallen, the founder of the AFA:

I am a pagan because the best things in our civilization come from pre-Christian Europe. I am a pagan because our ancestral religion is needed to help reverse the decline and impending extinction of the European-descended peoples.

(He’s also concerned that the Mexicans will subjugate the white Americans, but that’s just his ‘folk soul’ talking.)

And this is the World Church of the Creator again:

The Creativity Movement, whose motto is “RaHoWa” (Racial Holy War), proclaims that its belief system, Creativity, “is a racial religion” whose primary goal is the “survival, expansion, and advancement of [the] White Race exclusively,” [and] “white people are the creators of all worthwhile culture and civilization”

It doesn’t really matter that the AFA attempts to stick a little band-aid on their white supremacism by saying, ‘Hey, diversity’s great,’ especially after claiming that “the melting pot, carried to its natural conclusion, results in a sludgy soup of sameness.” The AFA, in their own words, wants a mosaic: plenty of colors (see, we’re not really racist!) but each one in a safe little box, the whiteness of their own tile unbesmirched by the colors around them.

But see, the thing that really chaps me is that most moderate (probably non-racist, but definitely non-critically-thinking) heathens are totally willing to condone racism and white separatism/supremacism — as long as it’s not conspicuous, frothing Aryan Nations-type white supremacism — in the name of ‘frith’. They don’t want to cause a rift with more conservative factions of heathenry (which frankly, baffles me; I can’t imagine wanting them as friends) or they can’t comprehend the difference between an interest in genealogy and pure racism.

Frankly, people of color have been living among white people in both Europe and America since white people started existing; people of color and people of mixed ancestry been practicing heathenry since the religion started existing; and despite cultural mixing, centralized government, Christianity, Wicca, The Man and lesbian feminism, somehow Odin still exists. So I’m not too fucking worried, especially given that even if a highly-specific asteroid impact obliterated all of the Northern European-descended people on the planet, Odin and the rest of Team Norse are more than likely to go crash some Afro-Diasporic ritual and start again from scratch.

And likewise, constantly, since the neopagan rebirth of heathenry, there have been white supremacists and racist sympathizers, like a tumour we can’t quite get rid of. Which is why I have to ask: is this really news?
